COVID-19 blog, 19 May: 8 new positive test results in 24 hours

Over the past 24 hours, 1258 tests were analysed for the COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2 virus, of which 8 (0.6%) showed positive results.

Based on data from the population register, 5 new positive test were found in Harju County (4 in Tallinn), 1 in Ida-Viru County, 1 in Pärnu County and 1 in Lääne County. In the statistics published today, one positive test has been moved from 17 May to 18 May.

According to the latest data from the morning of 19 May, 44 patients require hospitalisation in Estonia due to the coronavirus, of whom 3 are on ventilation. 298 persons have been discharged from hospitals, 309 disease cases have been closed.

To date 1458 persons have recovered from the disease. 938 (64.3%) of these cases have been closed and in the cases of 520 persons (35.7%), more than 28 days have passed from receiving a positive test result and they are not hospitalised.

No new deaths were registered over the 24-hour period. In total, the coronavirus has caused the deaths of 64 persons in Estonia.

A total of 71 441 first time tests have been carried out in Estonia, of which 1 791 (2.5%) have been positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. For more detailed statistics on coronavirus testing, please see www.koroonakaart.ee/en.

Globally, over 4.4 million people have been infected with the coronavirus and over 300 000 persons have died due to the virus. 

The Health Board reminds everyone that even after the end of the emergency situation, vigilance towards COVID-19 as well as other infectious diseases should stay high: hand hygiene, social distancing and staying home when sick are still important measures to follow. The coronavirus is spread mainly from person-to-person, usually via close contact with an infected person. Close contact is seen as a situation where people are closer than 2 metres to each other for the duration of 15 minutes.

COVID-19 is a droplet infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 that spreads through sneezing and coughing from people to people, and by way of contaminated surfaces and unwashed hands.

A total of 202 influenza and 1,726 COVID-19 cases reported this week 

In week fifteen, a total of 3,184 people fell ill with acute respiratory infections, of whom 38.4% were children. The overall incidence of acute respiratory viral diseases increased by 39%.

A total of 151 new influenza cases and 1,466 COVID-19 cases have been added this week

In week fourteen, a grand total of 2,297 people fell ill with acute respiratory infections. Overall, 36.4% of all of the new cases involved children. The number of new cases decreased by a third.
