Information for healthcare professionals with non-EU qualifications

If you have acquired your education outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland then this page contains some information for you to consider.

Doctor (with scpeciality)/dentist (with speciality)

In Estonia it is required that general medicine studies have to last for 6 years, consist of at least 9360 hours of theoretical and practical training and end with a Master´s Degree. So, for example, if your study period lasted for 5 years, after which you got your diploma and the Estonian ENIC/NARIC Centre says that your education is comparable to a Bachelor´s Degree in Estonia then it means that you cannot be registered as a doctor (even if you have attended a one year period of compulsory internship after graduation – Health Board only acklowledges your diploma).

In Estonia it is required that dentistry studies have to last for 5 years, consist of at least 5000 hours of theoretical and practical training and end with a Master´s Degree.

Whether you are a doctor or a dentist, there is a list of subjects that have to be in your curriculum that Health Board will check.

You also have to have at least 3 consecutive years of work experience as a doctor/dentist/on your speciality during the last five years (this requirement also applies if you have graduated less than 3 years ago, which means that because of lack of work experience you must take an aptitude test).

If your education does not meet the criteria or you do not have a work experience long enough then you will either get a referral to take an aptitude test at the University of Tartu (in Estonian language) or a refusal.

Below you will find file that contains a list of doctor/dental specialities in Estonia with the length of the required residency program/speciality training. If your training period was shorter then you cannot be registered on your speciality.

Nurse and midwife

In Estonia it is required that nursing studies have to last for 3.5 years based on secondary education (high school/gymnasium), consist of at least 5460 hours of theoretical and practical training and end with a higher education degree in applied sciences.

Midwifery studies have to last for 4.5 years and in the end the students get awarded with a higher education degree in applied sciences.

Whether you are a nurse or a midwife, there is a list of subjects that have to be in your curriculum that Health Board will check.

You also have to have at least 3 consecutive years of work experience as a nurse/midwife during the last five years.

If your training period was shorter or based on basic education then you cannot be registered as a nurse/midwife in Estonia.

If your training period was long enough and based on secondary education, but there are some subjects missing in the curriculum or you do not have the needed work experience then you will get a referral to take an aptitude test at Tallinn Health Care College or Tartu Health Care College (in Estonian language).

Pharmacist and dispenser/assistant pharmacist

In Estonia it is required that pharmacists have to study for 5 years and receive a Master´s Degree. There is also a list of subjects that have to be in your curriculum that Health Board will check.

Please provide verification that you have worked as a pharmacist for at least 3 consecutive years during the last 5 years. You do not have to have the mentioned work experience if you have graduated less than 3 years before submitting an application to Health Board. If you have graduated at least 3 years ago and you do not have the needed work experience then you will get a referral to take an aptitude test at the University of Tartu (in Estonian language). You will also have to take the test if all the required subjects are not present in your diploma supplement.

If your study period was shorter than 5 years and you do not have a Master´s Degree then you cannot be registered as a pharmacist in Estonia.

As a dispenser/assistant pharmacist you must have an education that corresponds to a vocational secondary education or higher education in applied sciences.

As an assistant pharmacist you do not have to present Health Board your diploma supplement, diploma itself (translated, verified) is still needed.

Please provide verification that you have worked as an assistant pharmacist for at least 3 consecutive years during the last 5 years. You do not have to have the mentioned work experience if you have graduated less than 3 years before submitting an application to Health Board. If you have graduated at least 3 years ago and you do not have the needed work experience then you will get a referral to take an aptitude test at Tallinn Health Care College (in Estonian language).
